From a mere concept in 1935, Florida's state park system has expanded to one of the largest and most heavily used systems in the country. Containing over 600,000 acres in more than 157 separate units, with an annual operating budget in excess of $70 million, the state park system today represents a major commitment by the State of Florida to the preservation of its scenic resources and provision of outstanding recreation opportunities for its people. One of our favorite State parks is Highlands Hammock and that was on of the first parks to be included in the program in 1938. Today the state parks in Florida are recognized as some of the best in the country and have now won the national first prize for the best state parks program.
